Detail of the 2025 work entitled The Portal, from the Degradient series, measuring 278 cm by 272 cm and produced in situ at the Galerie Les 2 Portes in Besançon, France, in July 2025. In this series of drawings begun in 2021, the artist Patrick Martinez-Mees developed a specific process where a number of sheets of paper of different colors are superimposed in a determined or indeterminate order and glued on top of each other to form a "sandwich" or a "mille-feuille" of paper. The drawing is then obtained by digging into the surface of the paper using a rotary tool equipped with an abrasive burr to reveal the different layers of color buried at different depths. The immersive work “The Portal,” of fairly large dimensions, covers the entirety of one of the gallery’s exhibition walls. Against a black background, an undulating shape resembling a more or less thick multicolored frame seems to undulate along the perimeter of the wall. Even if it gets close to it, the shape never touches the outer limits of the wall. The center of the work, also empty, is black. The colors of this vague frame, ranging from black to white, including dark blue, purple, red, pink, and orange-yellow, as well as the patterns of cracks and faults within, evoke molten lava seeking its way beneath the wall crust. The viewer is invited to step back to discover the wave pattern in its entirety or, on the contrary, to approach to delve into the details of the relief and the infractuosities of the meticulously shredded paper.
